 Verse: Proverbs 17:28

“Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise, and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding”.

Silence is one of the strategies God offers us to overcome adversity. It is a precious weapon. We must discern when to remain silent and when to speak. To illustrate this, let me share a few examples of situations where silence is the better choice:

  • At home, when tensions rise.
  • In life’s difficulties, avoid speaking carelessly, especially expressing negative thoughts.
  • When someone tells you things you cannot verify.
  • Avoid conflicts and seek peace during certain interactions with family members, colleagues, or classmates that could lead to arguments.
  • In the battles we face, let God act in His way.

Remaining silent in tense or conflicting situations demonstrates great self-control. It requires discipline and thoughtful reflection rather than impulsive reactions. Wisdom often lies in the ability to think before speaking. Proverbs 17:28 says, “Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.”

By choosing not to speak immediately, we can avoid misunderstandings and unnecessary conflicts. Silence sometimes allows us to better understand the situation and analyze others’ words before responding. This helps to clarify matters rather than complicate them.

Silence provides space to reflect and discern the best course of action. In stillness, we are often better able to grasp divine teachings or personal truths. God can inspire or guide those who take the time to be silent and listen.

By refraining from engaging in disputes or raising our voices, we foster an atmosphere of peace. This is especially important in human relationships, whether at home, at work, or in school. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Words hold immense power: they can build up or tear down. By remaining silent, we avoid saying things we might later regret. Wisdom sometimes lies in recognizing that some things are better left unsaid.

In many contexts, silence is a form of wisdom that helps us better manage human interactions. Whether to avoid conflicts, promote peace, or engage in deep reflection, it is often better to remain silent than to speak merely for the sake of speaking. This does not mean we should never express ourselves, but rather that we must choose our words and timing wisely. By letting God act in His way, we can find the peace and wisdom needed to navigate life’s challenges.
