1 Timothy The book of 1 Timothy
Verse: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:21
Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:21 cut straight to the core of our spiritual lives. They force us to ask: Where is my heart truly anchored? The answer is found in what we treasure most.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warns against storing up treasures on earth—things that are temporary, vulnerable to decay, and easily stolen (Matthew 6:19-20). Instead, He urges us to invest in heavenly treasures, those that are eternal and indestructible. Why? Because whatever holds the deepest value in our lives will inevitably claim our hearts.
Our hearts naturally follow what we value most. If wealth, status, or material possessions consume our thoughts, then our hearts will be entangled in the fleeting worries and desires of this world. But if our greatest treasure is Christ—His kingdom, His righteousness, His presence—then our hearts will be fixed on Him.
This truth is not about rejecting earthly responsibilities but about reordering our priorities. It is about making sure that our ultimate affection and devotion belong to God rather than to passing things.
How do we know if our treasures are misplaced? Here are some revealing questions:
If the answer to these questions revolves around temporary things rather than eternal ones, then our hearts are in danger of being drawn away from God.
Jesus Christ Himself is our greatest treasure. In Him, we find the riches of grace, the abundance of peace, and the promise of eternal life. When we seek first His kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33), everything else finds its rightful place.
Paul echoes this in Colossians 3:2, saying, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” The more we treasure Christ, the more our hearts will align with His purposes, and the less the world will have a hold on us.
Lord, reveal to me what I treasure most. If my heart is attached to things that do not honor You, help me to refocus my desires on what is eternal. Teach me to seek You above all else and to store up treasures in heaven. May my heart always be where You are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Let us continually examine our hearts and ask: Where is my treasure? Because where our treasure is, there our hearts will follow. May we invest in the eternal and find our greatest joy in Christ.
