Bible Reading: Matthew 5:3
Key Verse:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3 (NIV)
At first glance, this statement of Jesus seems paradoxical. How can poverty—even spiritual poverty—be a source of happiness? In a world that values self-confidence, independence, and personal achievement, Jesus invites us to walk a radically different path: the path of humility.
To be poor in spirit does not mean lacking intelligence or ambition. It means acknowledging our total dependence on God. It is admitting that spiritually, we are bankrupt and unable to save ourselves. It is standing before God with an open heart, free from pride or self-sufficiency.
Those who are poor in spirit do not come to God with their works, achievements, or personal righteousness. They come empty-handed—but with hearts ready to receive. And Jesus says they are blessed, because they have already received the greatest treasure: the kingdom of heaven.
Today, God is not looking for hearts full of themselves, but hearts open to His grace. He invites us to lay down our masks, to stop pretending we are in control, and to approach Him with humility.
Lord, I acknowledge that without You, I am nothing. Teach me to rely on You and to walk in humility. Help me not to seek my merit but to depend fully on Your grace. I want to be among those to whom You give the kingdom of heaven. Amen.
