The book of Proverbs is filled with divine wisdom, guiding believers on the path of righteousness and integrity. Among its many teachings, Proverbs 6:16-18 highlights seven things that God detests. This list is not exhaustive, but it offers a clear perspective on the attitudes and behaviors to avoid living a life that honors God.

Proverbs 6:16-18 (NIV):

“There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.”

  1. Haughty eyes (pride)Pride is often the root of many other sins. Believing oneself superior to others is a direct offense to God, who calls for humility and acknowledgment of our dependence on Him.

    Reference verse:

James 4:6: “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.”

  2. A lying tongue (lying)Lying destroys trust and breaks relationships. God is truth and calls us to reflect this truth in all our words.

    Reference verse:

Proverbs 12:22: “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.”

  3. Hands that shed innocent blood (violence)Violence and murder are grave violations of God’s law, which commands love and respect for human life.

    Reference verse:

Genesis 9:6: “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.”

  4. A heart that devises wicked schemes (evil plans)A corrupt heart that conceives malicious plans is far from God. He calls His children to meditate on things that are pure and virtuous.

    Reference verse:

Jeremiah 17:9: “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”

  5. Feet that are quick to rush into evil (eagerness to do wrong)Being quick to do wrong shows a disposition to disobey God. He calls us to turn away from evil and seek good.

    Reference verse:

Isaiah 59:7: “Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. They pursue evil schemes; acts of violence mark their ways.”

  6. A false witness who pours out lies (false testimony)Bearing false witness destroys lives and reputations. God demands justice and truth in all our interactions.

    Reference verse:

Exodus 20:16: “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”

  7. A person who stirs up conflict in the community (discord)Sowing discord among brothers undermines the unity and peace that God desires for His people. We are called to be peacemakers.

    Reference verse:

Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”

As we meditate on these verses, let us pray for God to purify our hearts and guide us on the path of righteousness. May we avoid these things that the Lord hates and strive to live a life that pleases Him. Amen.
